UFC is the popular acronym used to reference Ultimate Fighting Championship, which is the largest company around the world who promotes mixed martial arts. The weight classes of the sport are as follows: light heavyweight, lightweight, flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, middleweight, welterweight and heavyweight. The Octagon is the official name of the cage that matches are held in.

Fighters must wear no shoes and shorts while fighting. They are not permitted to wear long pants or shirts. If open-finger gloves are used, they have to be cleared in advance. Those who wear gloves do so to protect the hands from injury while punching. Jockstraps and mouth guards are required and must be approved beforehand.

There are many different ways a fight can end, such as: judges decision, disqualification, submission, no contest, knockout, forfeit and TKO or technical knockout. There is a ten-point system used for these UFC fights. Three judges are on site to score after every round. The winner of a round will be given 10 points while the loser receives nine or less. There are over 30 fouls that can be committed during fights and may result in points being deducted.

In more recent years, the fighting championship has grown in popularity. This is associated with the growth in television coverage of the fights. Fans usually look at or follow UFC blogs and mainstream coverage to stay up to date on all that is going on. Blogs might also feature event information, discussion forums, rankings, interviews, rumors and much more.
